LSPCA and the high population of stray animals

We are currently running several programs in Lilongwe which include:
• Rabies vaccination clinics,
• Spay and neuter clinics and
• Farm animal or livestock program.
These programs have carefully been selected to address the aforementioned problems, especially the issue of rabies which is a growing problem within the City.

The rabies clinics are often a crazy affair with 100’s of dogs running crazy through the exercise of registering, identification (straps and microchips) depending on the age of the animal, vaccination and issuance of certificates. All for free!!
We have also instituted spay and neuter clinics to compliment the rabies prevention through sterilizing community dogs to keep the number of strays under control. Over the past year the LSPCA has vaccinated over 2000 dogs and neutered over 100, it’s the tip of the iceberg but it’s a start.
Through the farm program the LSPCA is promoting the welfare of the animals but also to improving the livelihoods of the farming community. This ties in with promoting the backyard chicken farmers and sensitizing and supporting them against the danger of Newcastle Disease Virus.
Also, the LSPCA has devised a cyber kennel concept which offers all the benefits of traditional shelters but avoids the inadequacies and costs of maintaining such facilities. Here the organization has established a network of volunteers that agree to foster animals for a definite period within which the LSPCA tries to find an appropriate home. This program not only aims to rescue animals in dire conditions but also works towards supplying the public with safe pets for their households, eliminating the temptation of responsible pet owners obtaining animals from the side of the road, a practice that fuels this very in-humane treatment of animals. All animals are sterilized before re-homing and the adoptee is usually required to pay/donate to the LSPCA which funds are then utilized in supporting all the aforementioned community the programs.
We have a long up-hill battle ahead but we have a dedicated team in place that is determined to change a culture here but we will need the support of the local community to succeed. We need the general public
• to stop buying animals on the side of the road,
• Instead adopt our beautiful street specials and avoid buying pedigrees.
• Step up to the plate and become a foster parent, adoptee or Officer
• Spread the word
• Take responsibility for your loved pet, even if that means taking them home.
